. Write a letter within 120-150 words to Li Hua to give him some suggestions on improving social skills and hand it in tomorrow morning.
Try to use the following structure:
First,…
Second,…
In addition,…
Last but not least,…
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
.Read the following passage and do the exercises.
Be the first to say “Hello”If you’re not sure the other person will remember youoffer your name to ease the pressure. For example“I am Fredglad to see you again.” Smile first and always shake hands when you meet someone.
Listen more than you talk.
If there are people you especially want to meetone of the best ways to approach them is to be introduced by someone they respect. Ask a mutual friend to do the honors.
Remember to ask people questions about themselveshoweveravoid personal ones. Begin with a question that will get you a simple reply and go from there. The most importantthoughis to be self--confident.
In order to have a good conversationthere are only three things to leave outpoliticsreligion and personal questions.
Politics and religion should be avoided for obvious reasons. Generally speakingpolitical and religious opinions are personalpeople avoid discussing themeven with friends and workmates. If a person asks you about politics or religionand you do not want to talk about themit is perfectly OK to say“If you do not mindI would rather not talk about politics/religion.”
Personal questions including such things as marriageincome and age should also be avoided. If you are not sure if a question is personal or notall you have to do is asking for permission to ask. For example“May I ask you a personal question”or “Would it be OK if I ask whether you are married”If the person says that it is OKplease go on. If the person says it is notmove on to another topic quickly.
A good conversation where two people share useful information can serve two purposes. Firstit can give you some English practice that is interestingandsecondit can lay the foundation(基础)for friendly exchange and perhaps a friendship.

Read the passage aboveand tell the following statements true(T)or false(F)
( )1 Listening is more important in small talk.
( )2 Religion is a suitable topic for small talk.
( )3The passage suggests that you must be self--confident in small talk.
